Industry consolidation may impact your business

It's hard to ignore the headlines -- Qwest and Verizon are competing to buy MCI... SBC merging with ATT -- With national networks and millions of customers, these large carriers touch consumers and businesses across the country.

Whether consolidation will bode well or ill for your business remains to be seen. There are powerful forces in play -- voice services looming from cable providers, VoIP standing the carriers’ entire service model on its head, and mobile phones replacing traditional landline services -- just to name a few.

Among the possible impacts of this and other deals is that the consolidated companies will operate more efficiently after eliminating redundancies and exploiting economies of scale, or prices for traditional services may rise as competition decreases. The situation is too fluid to be sure...

Stay tuned, though, we’ll be following the merger activity and its implications for your business. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on where things are headed as we meet face to face throughout the year.

As you see we have affiliations with strategic players so give us call if you have any questions about what is happening in our industry.

Business Communications… Internet Telephony (VoIP)

Internet Telephony is changing the way businesses manage communications. Telephone systems that take advantage of the Internet Protocol (IP) provide a unique opportunity for businesses to increase productivity and improve customer support. They also reduce costs by allowing voice and data traffic to be shared over the same network connections. Companies save on local and long distance charges as well.

In a nutshell, IP phone systems convert voice calls to data and the data is arranged into packets. The packets are sent over one or more data networks until they arrive at their destination, where they are turned back into voice for the recipient.

IP traffic runs across the local data network that connects all the PCs and printers in your office. Today's IP phone systems plug into the same data network. Voice calls between employees in different locations simply traverse your data network or the Internet, while other calls are automatically routed to the public telephone network, including emergency 911 calls.  Since you will no longer have to pay for separate voice and data lines, the overall cost of telecommunications for your business is greatly reduced.

Users can also take advantage of new time-saving applications, such as unified messaging that puts email, voice messages, and faxes into a single inbox for convenient access, even from remote locations.  Voice mail messages can be saved and forwarded just like email text and retrieved remotely over the Internet, giving road warriors an easy way to stay connected with the home office.

Next month we'll talk more about hardware-based vs. carrier-based IP Telephony solutions. But if you need help in planning your migration to Internet Telephony right now, please contact us at (888) 300-6600 or email us at info@universal-tel.com

Moving to a new location?  Early planning pays off!

If you’re planning to move office locations it pays to consider your communication systems and data networks the lifelines of your business. Moving an office phone system and re-establishing network connections require attention to detail and sufficient lead time to accomplish.

With the phone company and other service providers sometimes moving at a snail’s pace, it pays to start planning 3 months prior to the move to avoid unexpected problems at your new location. Businesses that do not have the time and manpower to devote to this kind of planning would be wise to seek outside assistance.

You can make the job easier by going with well established firm with a solid track record in coordinating complex voice, data and video networks. The right partner will help you avoid any disruption to communications that may hinder employee productivity, frustrate customers who need help, or cause you to lose out on sales opportunities

If your business is considering a move and could use some assistance, be sure to call Universal Telecommunications at (888) 300-6600 or email info@universal-tel.com.  We can take the headaches out of moving!
