IP Telephony (VoIP) – What to look for in a new system  (Third in a multi-part series)

It’s not a question of if you’ll use IP for your communications, but when? When your organization begins its evolution toward IP there are some important attributes to look for in your new system…

  1. Seamless migration -- make sure the system supports open standards and that you won’t get locked into one company’s proprietary technology. Will you be able to use your existing investment in equipment as you make the transition?

  2. How will end-users benefit? -- does the system transform how they work? Is there support for real-time collaboration, plug-and-work for teleworkers, multimedia access? What new capabilities will help them?

  3. Desktop tools -- do the new telephones and other devices change the users’ day-to-day experience? Look for location transparency, integration with mobile devices, and visual access to call handling features.

  4. Features -- you’ve been using tried-and-true features with your current telephone system, so ensure the new system will continue to support what you need. And you’ll want to address the specialized needs of your organization. Is a new capability on your “wish list” now available with IP Telephony?

  5. Multi-purpose Platform -- voice mail, auto-attendant, automatic call distribution, wireless… make sure the system you select can do it all now and in the future, when you grow and need important new capabilities.

Check out what our Clients are saying…

"One of the first things I did when I came on board at MAPEI was to call in Universal Telecom to help clarify all of our voice and data bills.

Mervyn helped MAPEI identify and disconnect thousands of dollars in service we were no longer using.

Phil worked with me to put together a plan to migrate our Wide Area Network from frame relay to MPLS while driving down our costs.

They are like a part of my IT staff without having to pay their salary and benefits!"

Implementing a VPN over MPLS

(Second in a multi-part series)

In the previous issue of Business Communications News, we hinted at the relationship between IP-based VPNs and the emergence of Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology. Both IP and MPLS can be used to create corporate VPNs. In fact, many carriers that offer managed VPN services now do so over a highly efficient MPLS network, bringing many benefits to you.

  • MPLS offers more security for all types of business traffic since its routing table is separate from the public Internet. This means your IP addresses and packet payloads are hidden from public view.

  • Both IP and MPLS can be used to create corporate VPNs. Like an IP-based VPN, an MPLS-VPN accommodates a variety of services (voice, data and video), but MPLS is able to allocate and handle real-time traffic like voice much better than IP.

  • MPLS also provides more resiliency than traditional data services. If one path on a MPLS network fails or becomes congested, traffic is automatically “fast rerouted” around it over alternative paths, protecting real-time applications, like voice, from disruption.

  • MPLS is also easy on your IT staff -- whatever you have in place now remains as is, such as your Private or Public IP addressing scheme or security (authentication, encryption).

Disaster Recovery – Offsite data backup offers the best protection

Many companies understand the value of routine data backups – when a drive crashes or a system malfunctions, they have recourse to an alternative data source that allows business processes to resume without the loss of important information and applications.

But what if your building becomes damaged by flood or fire, can’t be accessed during an emergency, or loses power? How will local and remote staff get to your data then? Off site data backup offers the best protection because whatever happens in your building is not likely to impact a data center in another region, where you have your information safely stored.

After setup, the backup process is fully automated to occur at any time of the day. During your backup window, data is collected, compressed and encrypted. The backup data is then transmitted offsite via a dedicated private network connection, a VPN connection, or Internet connection to a secure data center.

A secondary backup copy is replicated to a backup storage server for full redundancy, further guaranteeing that your data can be restored. Individual files can be restored using a simple and easy to use online interface.

Through our partnership with DataAssure we can help your business with its data backup needs. For more information, call Universal-Tel at (888) 300-6600 or email us at info@universal-tel.com.
