Internet Telephony – Why more small and medium sized businesses are making the move

The use of Internet technology in Voice Telephony is delivering on its promise to  provide both savings on telecommunications costs and increased functionality to improve productivity. There are several compelling reasons for SMBs to move to voice systems that leverage the Internet right now... here are just a handful of examples:

  • With an older, more traditional PBX, many companies pay big bucks for support services every time they want to change, add or move a telephone line. With today's new IP (Internet Protocol)-based phone systems, that cost is reduced or eliminated because new IP phone system software can automatically recognize a phone when it is plugged in.

  • Many companies incur large long-distance charges while making calls between their office locations. These charges can be substantially reduced or eliminated by moving your voice traffic to your data network using IP and the existing data connections between your offices.

  • Highly mobile sales or service people obtain call handling flexibility. For example, IP phone systems allow your staff to remotely configure their office phone to forward calls to their mobile phone between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. while they are commuting, to their home phone between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and back to their voicemail after 7 p.m.

  • Some IP phone systems also offer unified messaging that provides text to speech conversion. This allows a salesperson on the road to have forwarded e-mail messages read out loud through their mobile phone.

These advantages are compelling and in many cases make the ROI calculation a no brainer for businesses looking for a quick payback. Next month we'll look more closely at the different types of IP phone systems that businesses are deploying to improve their operations.

BellSouth PRI – Improve the local & long distance service that connects your PBX to the world

Many companies with PBXs or complex phone systems have made the switch to ISDN PRI to connect their telephone system to the Public Switched Telephone Network. This all-digital networking service provides high-speed, high-capacity connectivity, intelligent call handling, and Caller ID – features that are ideal for companies that have a PBX or call center.

With an ISDN PRI connection for your vital communications, your business stands to benefit in numerous ways…

Quality: Digital transmission provides exceptionally clear voice communications and error-free video, image and data transmission.

Increased Productivity: More bandwidth makes it possible to communicate with more customers, make more sales and process orders faster.

Smart Trunk Technology: Assign specific channels to services such as Toll-Free service or Direct Inward/Outward Dialing for better flow of voice, video or data traffic.

Dynamic Channel Allocation: Assign channels to voice traffic during the day and data traffic at night, or assign channels on a per-call basis to achieve maximum efficiency.

Calling Line Identification: Provides directory numbers for incoming calls, allowing you to access customer information before answering the call. In fact, it is the only technology available that allows PBX users to identify incoming callers.

Compatibility and Expandability: ISDN channels are fully compatible with today's PBX systems and can be combined to build as big a pipeline as needed for bandwidth-intensive applications.
